The Hill Country’s Saturday Morning Tradition is a Locavore Haven

At Honey and Hare, we love homegrown and handmade crafts. We also LOVE supporting small businesses and local artisans — especially when they’re supplying us with that luscious raw honey we’re always stirring into our teas and tinctures. We’re serious honey hounds over here. Did you think we came by our name by accident?

If you’re looking for an all-in-one place to explore the best of the Texas Hill Country, check out the New Braunfels Farmers’ Market. It’s open every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm and located at 186 S Castell, in the Krause’s parking lot. Explore the diverse cuisine, listen to live music, and get all your locavore groceries for the slow food life-style. There’s no better way to spend a Saturday morning in New Braunfels.

Here’s What You’ll Find

If you think farmer’s markets are limited to endless tables of chard and kale, think again. I mean, yeah, you can definitely stock up on greens, but you can also find small-batch cheeses, farm-fresh eggs, smoked meats, infused olive oils, unbearably good pasta, artisanal breads, and all the organic produce you can imagine direct from the farmers of Comal and Guadalupe counties. You can even stock up on home essentials, like natural and chemical-free laundry soap and cleaning products.

The real treat of the market is exploring the handcrafted goods made by some of New Braunfels most skilled small business owners. While wandering the stalls of the market, you will find treasures, like fresh-cut flowers, hand-carved toys, one-of-a-kind jewelry, and all-natural bath and body products.

HOT TIP: Pick up a fresh squeezed lemonade to sip while you cruise the stalls. It’s the sweetest way to stay cool while you shop.

Our Favorite Vendors

We’ve had the chance to sample products from each of these New Braunfels small businesses, and we’re excited to recommend them to you, so you see what’s got us so excited!

Not seeing your favorite vendor on our list? Let us know who we should patronize next! We’re all about supporting local businesses, so keep checking back with us as we continue to highlight local artisans and crafters.

HOT TIP: Don’t forget to bring cash and your reusable shopping bags and baskets! Most vendors do accept credit and debit, but with a hefty fee on their end that drives up overhead. Paying cash means more of your money stays local.

Farmers’ Market Lingo

Want to sound like a pro at the next farmer’s market? Here’s a bit of jargon to help you fit in:

Apple-pie Order: perfect order or neatness.

Locavore: a person whose diet consists only or primarily of locally produced food.

Artisan: a worker in a skilled trade, especially one that involves making things by hand.

Slow Food: food that is produced or prepared in accordance with local culinary traditions, typically using high-quality locally sourced ingredients.
